What: DC Fashion Week: Washington Menswear Collection Fashion Show

When: Sunday February 15

Where: Doubletree Hotel, NW Washington D.C.

Why: To”define ‘Washingtonians Style’ for 2009″

So we at MESH aspire and ascribe only to greatness, or atleast his cousin potential... so instead of me giving you the rundown on EVERY line that was at this event, I’m going to give you a look at the two collections that atleast mildly intrigued us: Andrew Nowell Menswear and Ray Vincente Menswear.

ANDREW NOWELL MENSWEAR

Sighting his inspiration as being the tailoring-savvy Savile Row in London, punk rock, and hip-hop, AN Menswear definitely was somewhat eclectic. A few times he tried (sometimes unsuccessfully) to mesh these styles together. However there were  certain times – when he was dark and simple – in which Nowellwas intriguing.

Is he headed for Bryant Park? Not right this second. But are there a few pieces we think you should look into? Most definitely.

dsc_0048

The tailoring on this look is very nice á la Savile Row: “the Tailoring Headquarters of the world.”dsc_0051

You can see the punk inspiration in this look with the combat boots, hat, and leather bombing jacket.

dsc_0055

I’m never a fan for the “Will Smith in M.I.B.” look, but once again the tailoring here is impeccable and the flower brooch is a nice touch to complete the look.

Ray Vincente Menswear

Ray Vincente, I believe was the best altogether collection. It was unique, and I really aprreciated the odd patches of fabric and the peculiar construction of his pieces. If nothing, the look wasn’t generic, in fact it was plain strange – but in this case strange was good.

Once again, Vincente may not be booking his flight to New York in the fall just yet, but I would definitely recommend a few of his pieces to the style cognizant man who at times tires of the same generic look. dsc_0105

dsc_0116

Notice the odd construction. Definitely not run-of-the-mill.
dsc_0119

Honestly this look confused me. I didn’t know whether it was so droopy looking  because of poor construction, or if (look at the pants and the way the fabric hangs) Vincente was just going for a slightly bohemian look. I’m crossing my fingers and going with the latter.

Like I said these were the ones that atleast mildly garnered my attention.

nozuka02

Justin Nozuka has been a fresh breathe of musical air as of late. His 2007 (yes, that is a while ago) album Holly (named for his Mother) caught a lot of attention in late 2008. His music is very haunting and his use of acoustics is simply genius. He also wrote a lot of the songs when he was young (15). His song “After Tonight” initially gained attention. His music deals with extremely deep themes such as “Save Him” dealing with domestic violence. Check out Justin Nozuka if you haven’t already. Below is a clip for his song “After Tonight” and his song “Save Him”

“After Tonight”

“Save Him”

Some suggested Justin Nozuka songs to look up:

“Oh Momma” –” Golden Train”–”Supposed to Grow Old”

So. MESH needs your help to see what kind of music you all appreciated on the MESH MIXTAPE  The Music Volume 1: After Hours.

Vote on your favorite Act in the poll on the right of the page.

Act I- The Club included club bangers (Rap)

Act II-The Hook Inlcuded some fun tracks (Uptempo R&B)

Act III- The Bedroom included some baby making cuts (Slow R&B “Sex Songs”)

Act IV- The Morning After  included some alternative music (Alternative/Indie/Electronic)

Act V- After Hours inlcuded three songs that fit into the R&B category but with a slight twist (“New Age” R&B)

-Which is your favorite??

Don’t have the mixtape yet? (silly rabbit). Click here.To cop it.

Time for a couple new song downloads.

ne-yo-u06(Lickin’ My Fingers- NeYo)–Download

I noticed that Ne-Yo’s last album didn’t really have that classic “Mirror” of his first or the “Say It” of his second. I wonder why? Well this is a great Ne-Yo sex song. So. Download It.

justin_timberlake1(Better Not Together- Justin Timberlake)–Download

So. I’m ready for a new Justin Timberlake CD. It’s really that simple. It’s kind of hard to believe that the Justin as we know him today spawned from N*Sync (yea, you forgot too). “Better Not Together” is a really good song about, well, not being with someone anymore.

kc(Look Up In Da Stars- Kid Cudi ft. Wale)–Download

Kid Cudi is slowly rising to become the hottest Hip Hop act of 2009. You know it, don’t doubt it. This song “Look Up In Da Stars” makes me happy. Point blank. So get happy too and download it.

t-pain-rap-jv06(Flight School- T-Pain ft. Kanye West)–Download

T-Pain is known for usually coming with hot songs and this “Flight School” leak with Kanye is no different. The vibe of the song is real cool and worth the download.

lily-allen-15(Fuck You- Lily Allen)–Download

I told you Lily said it and not me. Let me take this time to officially declare–Lily Allen is that bitch and I love her–now that that is out the way, “Fuck You” is a fun song with a deep message (much like all her songs). It talks about bigotry and hatred in the world and simply tells those who are intolerant of others–fuck you. Her album It’s Not Me. It’s You is out and worth giving a listen to.

Some Others:

(Common Sense- Ne-Yo)

(Glide For Me- Redd Hott ft. Bobby Valentino)

Enjoy.

You should know the deal by know–Old School Video of the moment. “Turn Your Lights Down Low”- Lauryn Hill & Bob Marley

Looking at this makes me really miss the genius that is Lauryn Hill. Am I the only one still hoping for an unexpected Lauryn comeback??

Yes, “At Last” is the title of a famous Etta James song that is popularly covered by various artists (including a certain Beyonce for a certain potrayal of the classic singer in a certain movie). Although “At Last” is probably Etta James’ most popular song and the one most covered it’s nice to hear the rare beauty of her other songs especially when they are covered by talented artist. I recently ran across a cover of Etta’s song “Fool That I Am” by one of my favorite artist. Grammy award winning–Adele.  The song has become Adele’s favorite to cover and a staple at her live shows. Check it out.

It’s the day before Ash Wednesday. The time just before everyone decided to give up something signficant for Lent in anticipation for Easter Sunday. It’s a big Catholic and French tradition. It’s one of my favorite “holidays”–Fat Tuesday aka MARDI GRAS. And for the second year in a row, as my friends stumble around drunk, flashing various body parts for beads, I am here in Washington, D.C. envious of the festivities taking place at home in Louisiana.

The Mardi Gras season is one filled with excitement, music (Second-Line!), festivals, parades, beads, King Cakes, and King Cake Babies. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, one day soon before you are too old or don’t really care you should venture down to Louisiana (particularlly New Orleans) for a Mardi Gras celebration. You won’t be disappointed. The atmosphere of wild young adults to the light hearted screams of children hoping to rack up as mean beads as they can is truly a unique encounter.

The traditional colors of green, purple, and gold fill every decor as everyone gets their last bit of “sin” out before the start of Lent. The tradition goes back to the late 17th Century and remains strong today. Laissez le bon temps rouler!!! (Let the good time roll!!).

1425154850_8ef007488fThe Music/Parades are always a blast.

90107-004-c7a933ddmardi-gras_5002218174985_668e43300fHappy Mardi Gras! Have fun fasting for Lent (haha).

It’s been 20 years of work from the controversial (CONTROVERSIAL!) photographer David LaChapelle. His photography is bold, attention-grabbing, offensive, and inspiring. He has shot countless celebrities for countless magazine covers (his most famous probably being the controversial covers of Britney Spears and Kanye West for Rolling Stone).  He is also responsible for the highly acclaimed documentary Rize that featured krumping in California. (Oh!-and he’s one of my favorite photographers haha).

If you don’t think his work is sick–than you’re DUMB (it’s that simple haha).

I have been having a heavy heart as of late. Reason? It’s simple. I’ve experienced within the past two weeks, the most evil disease within others I can think of. It’s the disease of hatred.

I’ve never understood hatred. It always seem to me to be a waste of emotion. Why is it always the people who seem to be doing something positive with their lives are the ones with the most hate geared toward them? I know, I know, it signals that they are doing something “right”  but can’t you do something right with positive support? In a world as crazy as today’s, I find it astounding that people still have the time to focus so many ill emotions to others.

The MESH ideal is to be your own personal motivator. Surround yourself with a couple of positive individuals who will support you no matter what choices you decide to make. Focus-a word that can often be misinterpreted, focus is not only the drive and determination to attain success but encompasses a completely tunneled vision to outside distractions and obstacles strategically placed to impede in your journey of growth and success. So focus on what you truly need and want in this life. Above all, focus on yourself before you can even allot attention to others.

It’s ’09 people. There truly just isn’t enough time anymore to constantly look to break others down for a small moment of self-gratification. Instead of placing ourselves on these false pedestals where we feel that our opinions or ideals are the only ones with validation, remember there are many personal truths but only one truth so knocking others thoughts or ideals is pretty pointless. Maturity-something we all seem to lack at times, and it’s okay that we do, but maturity garners respect and in the end of things we all value how and who respects us.

Accountability is key. I ask my friends to point out my contradictions and hypocrisy to keep me on a path of positive growth. No one is perfect, but effort to truly be a positive person in a world so cold really can make a difference.

The mindset of someone being “better” than someone else has to leave. We are all different, we each have our own strengths, weaknesses, highlights, and shortcomings. Accept your shortcomings, build your weaknesses to become your strengths, and use your strengths to define yourself as the person you want to be.

Sorry if this is long and I’m rambling. It’s just really been bothering me for the past two weeks. Just remember, it’s 2009 let’s get on our grown mens and grown womens (ha!) and stop hating. There is no need for it these days.

As promised, MESH will be featuring events from DC Fashion Week. Our Feature of the Menswear show is in the works. Here is a little tease of the ASA Fashion show that happened Saturday on Howard University’s Campus.

oscarThe biggest night of the Thespian year is here… so of course we at MESH only thought it appropriate to make a cameo…stay tuned folks…

PRE-OSCAR THOUGHTS

JESUS CHRIST THE FASHION IS STUNNING. Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson (both BLACK and Best Supporting Actress Nominees) look AMAZING! Penelope Cruz has on a 60 yr. old vintage Chanel Dress…OW! Take that, vintage lovers… I really hope my fellow-bison Taraji wins, almost as much as I hope Viola Davis does… Anne Hathaway is GORGEOUS in Armani Privé…but enough of that…things are about to begin!

Channels inner Joker á la Heath Ledger….

AND HERE….WEEEE…GO!

8:40

Hugh “Wolverine from X-Men” Jackman is the host. His opening was pretty funny… I hope he can stay this good.

8:54

WINNER : BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS -

PENELOPE CRUZ in “VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA”

Ok ok…so I really wanted Viola to win…and to be brutally honest I find it hard to really appreciate Cruz’s acting when I can’t understand 60% of what she says… but at the same time how can you not like her? She just seems so nice. Felicitaciones Hermosa

9:16

OTHER WINNERS

• BEST SCREENPLAY – Dustin Lance Black for “MILK”

• BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY – Simon Beaufoy for “Slumdog Millionaire”

• BEST MAKEUP – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

• BEST COSTUME DESIGN – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

• BEST ANIMATED FILM – WALL-E

9:24 - COMMERCIAL BREAK THOUGHT

A lot of people simply do not like the Oscars for various reasons. I’m the anomaly. I love the fact that the best in the business come together in one place. I love the rich history. I love the the rawness of it all – of seeing those who on screen are so tough, so perfect, so…GOD-LIKE appear so open and vulnerable (they really don’t know who wins until they hear it, unlike other shows)… I just love it… just lay back and take it in …and I’m sure you will as well.

9:37 – COMMERCIAL BREAK THOUGHT

It’s a basic ceremony so far. And the most emotion I’ve felt thus far is the seething hatred for Howard’s wireless. They’re really making this play-by-play thing a lot harder than it needs to be. Taraji baby…can u donate a lil so we can update this shit system? Thankx love.

9:47

Seth Rogan (in this case with James Franco) and his skits enhance ANY award show moment. Sheer Comedic euphoria.

9:54

BEYONCE APPERANCE (lol) !!

So I was just thinking about how “just-ok” these Oscars are so far…and then…in the middle of Hugh Jackman’s second (getting old quickly) performance…who appears but Beyonce herself to add her own flavor to the performance. I’m not even NO WHERE NEAR one of those Beyoncé fanatics, but you have to respect someone who can totally change the atmosphere instantly…AT THE OSCARS no less. Go in B!

oh..Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and that girl from Mama Mia sang too…but who cares when you’re on the same stage as B?

10: 10

WINNER – BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:

HEATH LEDGER in “THE DARK KNIGHT”

You know how sometimes a person wins an award and you just can’t help but think they won simply because of some type of tragedy they endured? THIS AIN’T IT!  Heath Ledger was hauntingly brilliant in THE DARK KNIGHT and I believed from the moment I saw it that he deserved this award.

Congratulations Mr. Ledger. May you continue to Rest In Peace.

Heath Ledgerheath-ledger

10:37

11:20

WINNER: BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

KATE WINSLET for “The Reader”

Merryl Streep lost?…WHHHAAAAATTT?! That’s new. But on a more serious note, Mrs. Winslet has been most deserving of this award so many times and has, so many times been overlooked. Long overdue. Well deserved. Amen Kate.

WINNER: BEST DIRECTOR

Danny Boyle for “Slumdog Millionaire”

As B.I.G. used to say: “…and another one”

11:55

WINNER: BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

SEAN PENN in “MILK”

Ok so Sean P. has won this award about a million times… Ok only twice (2003 for Mystic River, 2008) but regardless of the number of wins, Mr. P has quietly built the case for Hollywood Immortality and the right to be mentioned in ANY TALK of the best Actors of our generation. Kudos to Mickey Rourke Everyone had written this guy off and said his career was over… but it’s very much back in the swing now. Congratulations for that Mr. Rourke.

WINNER: BEST MOTION PICTURE

“SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE”

Perfect ending to the best feel-good movie of the year. Congratulations. You owned these Oscars.

12:00 – END CREDITS

Yea so most of you don’t care for or love the Oscars too much…and that’s ok lol. But for the few of you out there who love this night like I do, I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did. Looking back you will realize that this was the first year that a feel-good, underdog, foreign movie totally ruled the Oscars (Slumdog Millionaire); one of the greatest actresses of our generation got her first Oscar (Kate Winslet); and of course, the first time MESHLIFE was with you for the whole ride lol.

Good Night and God Bless…back at it on Monday.

~AR!

Why? Well, it all has to do with a certain music genius named Terius Nash other wise known as The Dream. His 2007 Debut Album Love/Hate was one of my favorite albums of that year (just ask my friends, they’ll tell you). His new CD Love Vs. Money is set to hit stores March 24. At first I was skeptical of the new material leaked, even though “Rockin’ That Thang” is on my iPod rotation HEAVY, but as the release date draws near I constantly renew my faith in his sophomore album. Here are two more Dream leaks from his upcoming CD that just got me excited. “Walking On The Moon” featuring Kanye is an upbeat song while “Sweat It Out” is a classic baby-making grind all night knockin’ some boots love song (yep, all that). Both pretty good.

24954_Edit_Cov.qxd

(The Dream ft. Kanye West-Walkin’ On The Moon)

(The Dream- Sweat It Out)

Aaron, you just might be right about this one.

Yes, the song is old, but the video is sick so enjoy.
