Have you noticed all the “new” artists are old music producers? The producer turned artist is a growing phenomenon, almost as apparent as the songwriter turned artist (Ne-Yo, Keri Hilson, The Dream, etc.). It seems that simply being behind the scenes of the music industry simply doesn’t suffice anymore. I guess it’s hard to get a taste of the attention without wanting the whole pie of fame and celebrity.
At this point, the vast majority of us can name all four Kanye West albums in 5 seconds flat. (College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, and 808’s & Heartbreak in case you forgot). A lot of us can’t however name nearly half of the artists he’s produced for. Probably one of the most successful producers turned artist, Kanye has established himself and a substantial force in the Hip Hop game. He continues to produce for others while remaining the mega artists he has become to be. I just wonder what made him decide that strictly being behind the scenes was a no go for him.
Kanye's triumphs as a music producer and artist.
Famously successful producers turned artist Timbaland and Missy Elliott made the change in the 90’s and continue to claim success in both arenas of music star and music creator. Timbaland’s Shock Value was a highly successful effort while any and everything Missy releases is innovative, different, and pioneering.
Pharrell Williams has also claimed success as both a solo artists and with his group N.E.R.D with producing with partners as The Neptunes being his earliest form of attention and success.
Ryan Leslie is among the relatively recent group of producers following the trend. Ryan is known for his signature synthetic beats and catchy melodies. He figured why not use this style for myself and debuted his first album earlier this year.
Ryan Leslie's talent is undeniable.
Although it seems like the likely (and these days expected) decision for producers to churn out their own albums, all who try aren’t successful. It’s also nice to see producers refrain from the trend (Dallas Austin, Brian Michael Cox). And soon joining the rank of producers turned artist will be Jazze Pha (Ciara’s “Goodies”, Cherish’s “Do it To It”). He plans to release his Ladies & Gentlemen album this year. Wonder if it will garner the success of his other producing friends. If not, there’s always sticking with what your good at right?
