Music.Edge.Style.Heaven.

One of my favorite song-writers/artists/producers The Dream has released his first single to be lifted off his upcoming LoveKing album. The song (titled “LoveKing”) is classic Dream-and I am not complaining. I was apprehensive when the beat first kicked in but my worries vanished as the song got into the heart of it. With his trademark off-the-wall lyrics and addictive production, “LoveKing” serves as a pleasant start to the material expected from the album. I am a Dream fan, Love/Hate and Love Vs. Money were amazing and cohesive efforts so I expect the same from the third installment.

For the new music today I thought it would be cool if majority of the artists weren’t big names. So, lets kick it off with two names you should know followed by a few names trying to get their break into the industry.

[Monica-One in a Lifetime]

[Kandy Life- Lady Gaga] (recorded before her first album)

[Winner-Krys Ivory]

[Tipsy- Tayma Loren ft. The Dream]

Tricky Stewart recently sat down with Rap-Up.com to speak up Rihanna’s upcoming project and how underwraps they’re trying to keep the entire thing.

Rihanna’s new music is so top secret that even Tricky Stewart doesn’t know if he will have the album’s first single. The hitman behind “Umbrella” spoke exclusively with Rap-Up.com again to reveal the monstrous results of his recording sessions with the superstar.

RAP-UP: Rihanna’s fourth album has a release date of November 23.
TRICKY: Yes, yes.

RAP-UP: Last time we spoke, you hadn’t yet recorded with her. What became of your studio sessions?
TRICKY: I can’t talk about what happened, but it’s really good for me [laughs]. We delivered a very, very big record, but I can’t say what the name of it is or anything, just for the simple fact that it’s actually top secret. It’s definitely going to be a single. It’s either going to be the first or the second single. I do know that.

RAP-UP: So you produced the new song and The-Dream wrote it. Is anyone featured on it?
TRICKY: Yes. I can say it’s a rapper. I’m not gonna say who [laughs].

RAP-UP: Is the track uptempo?
TRICKY: Yes, it’s uptempo. It’s a club banger and it’s edgy.

RAP-UP: Would you say it’s bigger than “Umbrella”?
TRICKY: No, it’s different. It’s a superstar taking a step in a totally different direction. This album is different than her past works.

RAP-UP: How so?
TRICKY: It’s just an artist at work. This is Rihanna coming into her own and going from being a girl that has been singing big, huge hit records, and the artist is awake and alive and moving on this project. She knows exactly what she wants to say, she knows how she wants to feel. It was an amazing experience working with her and just really getting into her headspace of what she wanted to do.

RAP-UP: When will we be able to hear the first single?
TRICKY: Everything’s about to happen really fast, so it’s not gonna be long. It’s gonna be here in the next couple days.

The married couple goes in!

Christina Milian and The Dream are more than a great couple, they are also a great musical match as all of Christina’s material has been a lot better because of the musical influence of her husband. Though she is preggers, I expect her next album Elope to be a very decent effort. Here’s another leak from her featuring The Dream. It’s called “Supersonic” and it’s a pretty hot track.

So I had to play a serious game of catch-up. This past week I was extremely busy and finally I have down time to get some good posts in and hear new music. I decided that this post would be EXTREMELY long if I put everything I hadn’t put from the past week. SO, here are the new songs from Friday ’til now, because here at MESH. we like to stay up-to-date.

This month marks the eight of new music, albums, and more importantly of the year (This year is going by fast). From January until now, we’ve witnessed some of the most remarkable and unremarkable efforts in the music industry. We’ve experienced girls “Rocking That Thang” while living the “Magnificient” live. We’ve all spoken “Gibberish” avoiding the inevitable way love can “Knock You Down.” 2009 has been debut year of new artist while seasoned artists experimented with new sounds. Songwriters and producers have switched roles becoming artists while rap stars tried their hand in rock. It also marked the return of some old favorites. And the best part about it is, there is still four months remaining.

MESH. has compiled a list of the  year’s top albums (in our opinion) thus far  (Disc 1) as well as the albums we can’t wait to get our hands on (Disc 2). Let’s get into it.

2009’s Best Thus Far

The Dream — Love Vs. Money

The Dream’s sophomore effort Love Vs. Money continues where his debut Love/Hate left off. The gritty/clever lyrics from The Dream coupled with the amazing production of Tricky Stewart produced one of the year’s greatest efforts. The album solidified the Dream’s impeccable craft of effortlessly creating memorable tracks such as “Put It Down” “Love Vs. Money” “Mr. Yeah” “Fancy” and basically every song on the album. It was a musical delight to the ears from the first track to the last. This is what new R&B should sound like.

Ryan Leslie- Ryan Leslie & Keri Hilson- In a Perfect World

As mentioned in a previous MESH. post [here], there has been a growing phenomenon in the music industry of producers and songwriters jumping from behind the spotlight to take the forefront as artists. Ryan Leslie’s self titled debut proved why he is one of the most talented producers in the game. The infectious rhythms in tracks like “Gibberish” and “How It Was Supposed To Be” filled the entire album and was a great (but sadly under appreciated) effort. Songwriter Keri Hilson had a large buzz about her talents before her debut album was released. Known for penning several hits, and being ‘that girl’ on Timbaland’s hit “The Way I Are,” Keri looked to establish herself a strong force with In a Perfect World. Her efforts were stifled at first as her first singles didn’t pick up but when her #1 hit “Turnin’ Me Off” became a certified club banger, things changed. Her album has several gems on it including the sultry “Slow Dance” and the beautiful “Make Love.” Keri & Ryan both had incredible albums this year.

Maxwell- BLACKsummers’night &    Joe- Signature

2009 marked the return of R&B favorites Maxwell and Joe. Joe’s album Signature went under the radar a little but was a very solid effort. It when back to classic R&B and allowed Joe to showcase his artistry. The smooth tracks of “Wanna Be Your Lover” and “Metaphor” showcase the quality of the album. Maxwell’s release was perhaps the most anticipated R&B comeback of the past five years. BLACKsummers’night is a classic album filled with heavy soul, funk, and sultry instrumentals blended with Maxwell’s signature falsetto. His lead single “Pretty Wings” was one of the most touching tracks of the year while other songs on the album such as “Playing Possum” and “Stop The World”  also speak to Maxwell’s ability to embed genuine emotion within each song he sings. Great comebacks.

Laura Izibor- Let the Truth Be Told &   Electrik Red- How To Be a Lady Vol. 1

New artist Laura Izibor showcased her songwriting, producing, and singing talents on her debut album Let the Truth Be Told. The adult contemporary album is filled with empowering songs fuzed with soul. Tracks like “MMM” and “From My Heart to Yours” sum up what to expect on the disc. Her album is said to be in the lineage of Jill Scott and Lauryn Hill, which speaks to how genuine her sound and music is. Electrik Red (comprised of Naomi, Sarah, Lesley, and Binky) came with pure heat with their debut How To Be a Lady Vol. 1. The ironically titled disc included a slew of songs that speak to the power, sexuality, and fun of being a lady. Their debut is one of the most well put together debuts with production from The Dream and Tricky Stewart, their sound is distinct and original. From the sultry “9 to 5″ to the fun “P is for Power” the girls have looked to take R&B girl groups to the next level.

Fabolous- Loso’s Way &     Drake- So Far Gone (Mixtape)

The year in hip hop hasn’t had too many spectacular releases but has had some amazing mixtapes from the likes of Kid Cudi, J. Cole, Wale and others. One album that is impressive, is the the recently released Loso’s Way from Fabolous. From the single “Throw It In The Bag” to “Money Goes, Honey Stay” to the gritty “There He Go” and “Pachanga,” Loso’s Way signals a growth within Fabolous. Simply put, the album bumps hard and might be well on its way to be a classic.  Although it’s not an album, it would  be foolish not to include the So Far Gone mixtape from Drake. It was perhaps the biggest treat to hip hop this year.  It generated a large buzz and following for a rapper who hadn’t even released an album yet. Every track form it is memorable rather it be “Uptown” or “Houstatlantavegas” or “Successful” or the now single “Best I’ve Ever Had.” It catapulted Drake into a light where most rappers only dream to be making his debut album one of the most anticipated albums of the year. I’m sure he will deliver.

Honorable Mention:

Chrisette Michele- Epiphany

India Arie-Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics

2009 so far has been an interesting year for music and with several anticipated disc soon to be released, it will definitely be a memorable year for music. Stay tuned for Disc 2: The Best To Come as we list the albums you will definitely want to get your hands on.

[ Christina Milian - Zipper ]

This Tapemasters Inc produced track goes in. The beat is tough, and I’m feeling her vocals. Two solid tracks in a row from The Dream’s new wifey, I’m kind of hype for her upcoming project. Don’t let me down girl.

Amerie

[ Amerie - Heard 'Em All ]

It was recently announced that Amerie’s upcoming album In Love & War was pushed back, again–but the tracks keep on coming. “Heard ‘Em All” is produced by Sean Garret and Eric Hudson, it’s a pretty decent up-tempo cut.

Terius “The Dream” Nash. Go to hell. Sorry, I just can’t believe his statements in this video I’m about to share. He claims that after the deluxe edition(re-release) of Love Vs. Money and his new album dropping later this year Love King, he’s giving the artist thing up. He will be “retiring” so he can control when his last album is opposed to people loosing interest in him. He wants to “kill The Dream” before anyone else can. I say go to hell for two reasons. 1.) I am a big The Dream fan, the man’s music is crack, and I refuse to believe that after only three albums he’s done. 2.) Everyone says they are retiring so I feel like it’s complete bullshit. Aside from his bullshit, his “last” album is completed and the deluxe re-release of his current effort will feature Aisha and my theme song “Hit It on the Road.” Peep the video.

Again, I can’t believe him because everyone “retires.” Jay-Z said he was yet he’s releasing an album this year, hell even Kid Cudi said he was before his career officially kicked off. So, I will keep on believing that even after this next album The Dream will continue to make the great music he does. Few albums bump like a Dream album, I’m just saying. Although on the grand scheme of things his absence wouldn’t be that noticably, to me and other appreciators of great music, he would be missed. (Lowkey, this might be a gimmick to make his last album sell better-just saying).

What do you think about The Dream’s statements?

Since I’ve been giving you all music so late in the day recently, I decided to drop some tracks early before I head off to work. Here are some cuts I came across that stood out this morning.

It was announced earlier this morning that one of the Black community’s most esteemed magazine publications, VIBE, would be folding. The news came as a shock to the MESH. team and we are deeply saddened because magazines such as this one have paved the way for young Black journalists, like ourselves. Below is a snapshot of the official last issue of VIBE magazine, which will not be hitting stands. It features The Dream and Christina Milian.

VIBE was an entertainment and lifestyle magazine started by producer Quincy Jones in 1993. Since then it has featured legendaries, such as the late Michael Jackson, Barack Obama, The Fugees, TLC, Mary J. Blige, Beyonce, and many more. VIBE spoke to a younger Black audience, unlike it’s counter parts Essence and Ebony. The publication will be deeply missed and not forgotten.

Click [here] for the official statement from former CEO Steve Aaron and former CCO/Editor-In-Chief Danyel Smith.

Someone decided to get mouthy and compare VIBE to BET. Here’s what my MESH. PNC Aaron had to say..

Not only has VIBE been the proverbial parchment for such masters of the art of journalism as Keith Murphy, Touré, Danyel Smith, Dream Hampton, Aliya S. King, and so many others who are respected around the world, it has done, in its history, what BET has failed to do: retain readers, while still expanding upon it’s horizons and raising its legacy rather than resting upon it.

No other hip hop magazine has a subscription base of over 800,000 persons and is consistently the first to sell out on newsstands.
No other hip hop magazine has won numerous EDITORIAL awards for their outstanding caliber of writing.
No other magazine has been able to garner the noted respect of such giants as TIME, VOGUE, The New Yorker, Readers Digest, and so many others, on the superb quality of its content.
No other magazine pays attention not only to hip hop, but art, current affairs, literature, fashion, and so much more.

Girl will you let me? Haha Okay. It’s another song title. This time from the musical genius The Dream. His new leak “Hit It On The Road” is different from most of his material and surprisingly remains good. It sort of his song “Let Me See That Booty” but slightly more gritty and edgy. We mentioned that he is currently working on his next album Love King (which is set to be released at the end of this year). Anyways, get to downloading. This one is a winner.
